The Wall House by FARM

Singapore-based architects FARM have designed the Wall House.

Description from the architects:

This is a tale of two houses – similar looking, yet independent and coming together to form a coherent whole. The two blocks sit on a sprawling piece of land, belonging respectively to the retired parents and one of their children.

This separation of the house into two blocks, in part a response to the sheer scale of the land, is also a requirement brief given by the clients. Programmatically, it consists of a two-storey block with the main living and master bedroom area, and a single-storey block housing the entertainment areas of the house.

What links these two volumes together is the huge central courtyard at the entrance expressed in an austere geometry of granite floor and wall, an organically shaped oculus and a minimalist planting of six willowy trees. Like a sparse yet artful Chinese landscape painting, this sets the tone for the rest of the spaces.

The landscape design, similar to the house, is also experienced in multiple correlated layers. It takes its inspiration from the philosophy of classical Chinese Garden where views are borrowed through cutouts and vistas, and where sight lines and spaces begin to overlap.

For its eighth edition, Design Miami/ Basel returns with an enhanced gallery selection, showing museum-quality works spanning five centuries of design, accompanied by a rich cultural programming of site-specific commissions, performances, awards and talks. All these will be presented in Design Miami/ Basel’s new Herzog & de Meuron designed home.

The June 2013 edition of Design Miami/ Basel will see a significant number of returning galleries and first-time exhibitors alike, all of which represent the world’s leading galleries specializing in collectible design. An international roster of nearly fifty historic and contemporary galleries from thirteen countries will be shown, alongside the fair’s cutting edge cultural programming, in Hall 1 Süd, part of the new permanent exhibition hall in Basel’s Messe. The fair will be held June 11-16.

Art Basel 2013 [updated]

The 44th edition of Art Basel, the premier international art show of its kind for Modern and contemporary works, will take place in Basel from June 13 to 16, 2013. Art Basel is bringing over 300 leading galleries from around the world to the heart of Europe. The exhibition includes the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, video and editioned works.

Perfectlounge is on the ground in Basel these days, mingling with the who’s who of the art world. You can of course expect exclusive Perfectlounge photography from both the pre-opening and the vernissage. Make sure to come back.

Unprätentiös wirkt er. Offen. Einladend. Und dank seinem unkomplizierten skandinavischen Design auch ein bisschen so, als hätte man den Stuhl schon einmal irgendwo gesehen. Er fällt nicht auf. Er gefällt. Passt sich optisch dem Raum und den Gegebenheiten an. Ein Stuhl, der nicht nur in einer Villa oder in einer Loft seine Wirkung entfaltet, sondern auch in einer 1-Zimmer Altbauwohnung oder einer WG. Ein Stuhl, den man nicht spontan als typischen Designer-Stuhl bezeichnen würde, und der damit eines der wichtigsten Prinzipien von Dieter Rams mit Bravour erfüllt: Gutes Design ist so wenig Design wie möglich.

Bisweilen mag die Frage, ob man sich für ein praktisches, hohes Bücherregal oder ein flaches, stylisches Sideboard entscheiden soll schwierig zu beantworten sein. Eine unkomplizierte Lösung bietet das Regalsystem „Stacked“, welches der Designer Julien de Smedt für den dänischen Hersteller Muuto entworfen hat. Dank seiner Modularität erfreut sich Stacked grosser Beliebtheit und ist nun auch in einer kleineren „mini“ Variante erhältlich. Die Grundelemente bilden Quader in unterschiedlicher Grösse und Gestalt. Mit Metallklammern lassen sich diese Quader fixieren und im Handumdrehen wieder umrangieren. Die „Lücken“, welche durch den freien, individuellen Aufbau entstehen, verleihen dem Regal indessen einen luftiges, leichten Auftritt, was man bei einem konventionellen Bücherregal oft schmerzlich vermisst.

Absolut Art Bureau at Art Basel

Absolut Art Bureau, the unit within The Absolut Company responsible for global art, is one of the associate partners of Art Basel at its events in Basel, Miami Beach and in Hong Kong.

Absolut Art Bureau collaborates this year with Brooklyn-based artist Mickalene Thomas on a large-scale art bar installation that will be in operation during Art Basel’s show in Basel [June 12–16, 2013].

The ambitious installation, ‘Better Days’, will transform the Galerie at Volkshaus, in downtown Basel, into an immersive art experience for the duration of the show. It is inspired by a theatrical play ‘Put a Little Sugar in my Bowl’ and parties hosted by Thomas’s mother in the late ‘70s.

‘Better Days’ will present a nightly programme curated by Mickalene Thomas, including live performances and appearances by guest DJs. The bar will serve bespoke ABSOLUT cocktails designed by the artist in keeping with the installation’s theme.

Das Haus Tugendhat im tschechischen Brno ist ein Solitär moderner Architektur. Es verkörpert den sozialutopischen Anspruch des Architekten Mies van der Rohe und den weltoffenen großbürgerlichen Lebensentwurf seiner Auftraggeber Grete und Fritz Tugendhat. Der Film erzählt die wechselvolle Geschichte des singulären Bauwerks und seiner Bewohner.

Regisseur und Produzent Dieter Reifarth verwebt in seinem Dokumentarfilm HAUS TUGENDHAT Gespräche mit Familienmitgliedern, einstigen Benutzern des Hauses, Kunsthistorikern und Restauratoren mit historischen Foto- und Filmaufnahmen zur facettenreichen Biographie eines Bauwerks. Vor dem Hintergrund der politischen Katastrophen des 20. Jahrhunderts erzählt der Film von den persönlichen Erfahrungen der Bewohner und Nutzer des einzigartigen Hauses, dessen Schönheit und Ausstrahlung bei Generationen von Menschen tiefe Spuren hinterlassen hat.
